"Images are consistent with someone who has, or has had, tuberculosis."
This is what a doctor wrote about me in June 2012. I had been sick for a month and I was not getting better. The nurse practioner said, "It's just a cold." I said, "I never get sick like this." Round and round we went. I had to beg for X-rays. I was so tired and ill, my mother, who is in no great health herself, came to live with us for two weeks and help out as I was unable to handle basic tasks, like folding laundry, without taking a long nap. When I heard this diagnosis, I thought I would lose my business, a yoga studio I was basically killing myself to make successful. I went to other doctors. The one with the exotic last name sounded promising. I thought he would recommend some dietary and lifestyle changes based on Eastern medicine. But he was submerged in Western medicine. He told me I had asthma and gave me an inhaler. I used it reluctantly.
I knew better. We are the only ones who can ever truly know how it feels to be in our own bodies. A doctor can't know that. Neither can a nurse, or a relative, or a spouse.
I did not have asthma. I did not have, nor have I ever had, tuberculosis – confirmed by subsequent medical tests. So I went searching. Are you searching for ways to feel better, to feel alive, in your own body? Does this story sound familiar to you? Is it your story?
I tried acupuncture and supplements and eliminating some foods from my diet. I still did not feel well, and I was so tired of it. Someone finally mentioned a nutritionist, two towns away, who had cured her Lupus through diet alone. I went to see her. It was like coming home. She knew. She could see me. Not the symptoms, but rather she saw the whole of me, the person who was on the verge of developing a full-fledged autoimmune disease. I was given two options: Take many more tests, some that take weeks for the results, or go on an elimination diet and see if I improved. Are you ready to feel better? So was I. As in now was not soon enough. I took option two.
Within days, I felt better. Within weeks, my husband said it was like getting his wife back. Changing how and what I ate changed my life.
Do I feel great all of the time? No. Am I better about self-care? Yes!
This experience clarified for me the work I am here to do: health coaching! I want to help you feel great again through a healthy relationship to food, to exercise, and to yourself.
In case you are interested, I have some credentials that show some education to go along with all this passion and enthusiasm. I earned my health coaching certification at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (let’s eat!), where I was trained in more than one hundred dietary theories and studied a variety of practical lifestyle coaching methods. I am a graduate of The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY (let’s get cooking!). I hold certifications in, and teach, Hot Yoga, Power Yoga, and Tai Chi Easy and Qigong (let’s get moving!). I am a college graduate. I spent the better of part of 10 years in college. In her graduation card to me, my mother wrote, "I am so relieved."
If my journey resonates, if you are motivated to change, let's work together so you can once again shine! I will help you create a completely personalized “road map to health” that suits your unique body, lifestyle, preferences, and goals.
