Frequently Asked Questions
These are the questions I am most commonly asked. If you don't see your question here, please Contact Me. I'd love to hear from you!
So you're a health coach. What is that?
I am a wellness professional who works with clients both one-on-one and in group settings to help you achieve your short-term and long-term health goals. I provide the pieces that are often missing when we strive for better health: support and accountability.
How is health coaching different from doing a diet or following a new trend, like Paleo?
Health coaching focuses on the needs of the individual. Every recommendation you receive from health coaching will be specific to you and not a generalized recommendation for everyone. Health coaching considers the client's goals, needs, lifestyle factors, and challenges. Beyond food planning and exercise, health coaching considers other factors that may be impacting your health including your career, your creativity, and your social life. We do this because there are so many parts of your life off the plate that impact what is actually on your plate.
How much support do I receive from you?
When I work with individuals, we start with 10 laser focused one hour weekly sessions to help you build a foundation upon which you can strive to reach your health goals. Between sessions, you receive weekday email support between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. It's the support you deserve to make the changes you desire in support of your health and well-being.
Do you work with health care professionals?
Yes. If you are under the care of a physician for medical reasons, and you've come to me so we can explore lifestyle changes, then I will collaborate with your physician to ensure that health coaching is in support of your medical needs.
Are you going to make me a vegan, give up coffee, or abstain from cake?
Let's be honest, I can't make you do anything. And frankly, that's not what health coaching is about. It is about making recommendations that support your vision of consistently sleeping through the night, feeling alive in your body, and shedding unnecessary stress in your life.
Is this a quick fix?
No. Short-term solutions to long-term problems will not help you achieve your vision of health. If you are reading this, it likely took a long time to reach the point where you have lost your spark, tried many diets, and are ready to receive the support and accountability you deserve from health coaching. Health coaching seeks to help people make shifts in their life that are sustainable and long-term.
Will you make me workout everyday?
Just the word workout makes me cringe. Workout implies punishment. What does your body need to heal, to feel well, and, ultimately, to feel alive? What movement feels really good to you, like you want to do it often? Health coaching partners with you to explore what physical activity supports and enhances your vitality so that you are exercising because you love your body and it feels good. If you don't like the gym, why are you going? I am a certified yoga and Qigong instructor. I draw upon these trainings to help clients find fun alternatives to traditional ideas about exercise.
Do I have to be a good cook?
No. You need to be willing to cook. Cooking is one of those skills that dramatically improves with practice. The key to controlling your health and your health destiny lies in controlling your food supply. Cooking is an easy way to do this. Love yourself so much that you are worthy of home-cooked meals.
Can you fix my marriage?
No. This is out of my scope of practice. I will always be honest about when a client's concern is out of my scope of practice.
